National Conference on Copyright Protection in Digital Environment 2016 Held in Beijing

On 26 April 2016, the National Conference on Copyright Protection in Digital Environment 2016 organised by National Copyright Administration of China (NCAC) was held in Beijing. The conference attracted an attendance of over 1,000, including representatives from relevant authorities and major internet enterprises, as well as IP judges, experts, and academicians.
At the opening of the conference, NCAC vice minister Yan Xiaohong delivered a speech, in which he pointed to three positive trends of copyright protection in the country, namely, the increasingly important role of copyright in shaping the ecology of the Internet, the industry's consensus expectation for effective digital environment governance, and the elevation of the online copyright enforcement to a higher level, with focused efforts on fighting infringement related to online literature, online news reproduction, and mobile terminal applications.
During the conference, the 2015 report on copyright protection in China compiled by China Academy of Information and Communication Technology Research was released. According to the report, the Sword Net 2015 campaign carried out jointly by NCAC, the State Internet Information Office, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and Ministry of Public Security resulted in investigation and disposition of 383 cases, administrative penalties of RMB4.5 million, and closure of 113 websites during the year.
In addition, during the occasion the 2015 top 10 copyright infringement and piracy cases were announced, and a total of 195 institutions and 215 individuals were awarded for their contribution to the national efforts in fighting against copyright impingement last year.
