CNIPA Releases 2025 IP Data of China
On 23 January 2026 at a press conference of Information Office of the State Council, China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) vice commissioner Mr. Rui Wenbiao along with officials from relevant CNIPA departments reported the intellectual property work of the CNIPA in 2025. Some highlights of the IP-related data released were as follows.
Patents
In 2025, the CNIPA granted 972,000 invention patents, 1.461 million utility model patents, and 666,000 design patents, with examination period for invention patents reduced to 15 months, and 96,000 patent reexamination and invalidation cases closed. As for international applications, in 2025 the CNIPA accepted 78,000 PCT patent applications, and 2,844 international design applications via the Hague Agreement were filed by Chinese applicants.
As of the end of 2025, the number of valid invention patents in China reached 5.32 million, of which 2.292 million were high-value invention patents, with its growth rate 2.2 percentage points higher than that of the overall valid invention patents; and the added value of China's patent-intensive industries has exceeded RMB18 trillion, accounting for 13.38% of GDP, up from 11.97% in 2020.
Trademarks
In 2025, the CNIPA registered 4.206 million trademarks, with average trademark examination period maintained at 4 months, and 384,000 trademark review cases and 112,000 opposition cases concluded. In that year, 6,718 international trademark applications under the Madrid System were filed by Chinese applicants.
As of the end of 2025, the number of valid registered trademarks in China reached 49.877 million; and among the world's top 5,000 brands, Chinese brands accounted for a value of US$1.81 trillion, ranking second globally.
Geographical indications
In 2025, the CNIPA approved 104 geographical indication (GI) products, registered 51 GI trademarks as collective trademarks or certification trademarks, and authorised over 20,000 business entities to use special GI symbols.
In China, 5,066 GI products have been cumulatively approved, 7,425 GIs cumulatively registered as collective trademarks or certification marks, and over 52,000 business entities authorised to use special GI symbols as of the end of 2025.
Integrated circuit layout designs
In 2025, the CNIPA issued 10,000 certificates for the registration of layout-design of integrated circuits (IC). As of the end of 2025, 93,000 certificates for IC layout-design registration were issued cumulatively in China.
