WIPO Launches Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Interchange (AIII)

On 17 March 2026, the Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Interchange (AIII), a new initiative to facilitate global expert dialogue on the technical and operational aspects of the intellectual property (IP) system in the context of artificial intelligence, was launched by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The AIII, rather than setting policy or legal standards, focuses on how technical systems and tools can effectively support creators, innovators and copyright owners, while also promoting the development of AI technology in a rapidly evolving environment.

The launch event was held at WIPO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. WIPO director general Mr. Daren Tang in his opening address noted that "History shows that new technologies only reach their full potential when the systems around them evolve too.… By building strong and healthy infrastructure networks, we can help AI achieve its potential of creating new opportunities while supporting, enabling and empowering human innovators and creators."

WIPO has also set up a Technical Exchange Network ("TEN") consisting of over 90 international experts to support the detailed, technical-level discussions envisioned for AIII. The TEN experts will start with mapping both existing copyright infrastructure and the technical challenges and opportunities arising from the intersection of AI and the creative economy. The results of the discussion will be reported at AIII's annual public meeting scheduled for 2 October 2026.
